The motor’s smooth & refined; the power delivery is linear, and the soundtrack is throaty but with a low decibel count. Lucky enough to own 2 RD350s, a Willys, an RX-100, and a Jawa. However, things are about to get interesting as Benelli has finally decided to wet its toes in the ‘classic’ waters with the Imperiale 400. See, a motorcycle may excel in both the departments, but excellence in one does not necessarily guarantee that it will be as good, or bad, in the other. Benelli’s latest offering for the Indian market, the Imperiale 400 is a retro classic with modern underpinnings. But the rear is unnecessarily harsh like your dad. The Benelli Imperiale 400 is powered by a 374 cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled, four-valve, fuel-injected engine, which puts out 20.7 bhp at 5,500 rpm, and peak torque of 29 Nm at 4,500 rpm. It’s the one that allows them to write “price starting at INR 1.69 lakh”. The bike is shod with TVS Remora tyres (100/90 at the front and 130/80 at the rear) which offer adequate grip on dry roads, but I am not entirely confident of grip levels in the wet, especially since I was able to reach their limit rather easily. Torque is the name of the game here and the Imperiale develops a mere 21bhp at 5,500rpm but the torque is highest in this segment at 29Nm. So, is the Imperiale 400 … I asked all of them about the ergos, and the unanimous answer was that it’s a very comfortable bike for everyone. With a 19 inch front and an 18 inch rear wheel the Imperiale 400 isn't a motorcycle to go corner carving on, but it feels well planted around corners. The twin pod instrument panel offers all the information which one might need. To add, with the grab rails placed much lower- one could barely manage to get his fingertips and would need to crouch to get a hold around them. The face has its own charm, thanks to the round headlamp flanked by round, clear turn indicators and twin pod instrument cluster sitting on top. And when it comes to riding distances, the fact that the there's barely any vibration from the handlebar helps a lot, as the bike does not leave you with buzzy hands. The Benelli Imperiale 400 BS VI takes on the Honda H'ness CB 350 and the Royal Enfield Classic 350. Steering geometry (rake & trail angles), wheelbase, suspension, chassis, weight, aerodynamics, and tyre grip determine the bike’s handling characteristics. Okay, that rhymed. Overall the retro look is still there and we love it. Pros: The ground clearance of 165 mm is high enough anyway (RE’s is 135 mm), so you won’t be scraping its underbelly even if the rear is made softer. And that puts a full stop on the questionable after-sales experience a lot of customers frequently complain about. Back in the day, the best part about most motorcycles used to be that one size fitted all. You also don’t feel the weight much in traffic, which, coming from a five-foot rider, says everything about it. At Rs 1.69 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the Benelli has the equipment to justify the price and to sweeten the deal, Benelli is offering a two-year complimentary service for the Imperiale and a three-year unlimited km warranty! Over the course of the few days we have had it, we have logged on a couple of hundred clicks on the clock. A new flyover over what used to be a traffic gridlock on the highway quickly brings me back to the present. And like I had mentioned in that Triumph’s review, even this Benelli can bring down instances of road rage, especially in Delhi. This is again where it feels like a mini-Bonneville. Have ridden the REs a lot too in the past more than two and a half decades of riding, thanks to my maternal uncle’s workshop that has been catering to Enfields, BSAs, Triumphs, etc., since 1969. The Chinese owned Italian brand is extremely upbeat with its new entrant that aims to takes on the established likes of the RE Classic 350 and also the recently launched Jawa twins. More importantly, it feels very smooth and has a refined feel to it. Benelli has priced the Imperiale 400 at Rs 1.69 lakh ex-showroom, which, depending on what version of the Classic 350 you compare it to might sound like a bit of a premium, but the fact is that the Imperiale 400 will come across as a pleasant surprise for a lot of enthusiasts with what it brings to the table.
